What Psalm 100:1-2 means
Noise, not performance. The psalm asks for volume rather than skill, and asks it of all ye lands rather than of the musical. Serve the LORD with gladness then puts the mood inside the duty, which is a strange and freeing thing to be commanded.

1Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
2Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
