What 1 Peter 2:9 means
Four titles stacked, all of them given rather than earned. Peculiar in the King James means belonging to someone, a people for his own possession. And the that clause names the purpose: you were called out of darkness in order to shew forth his praises, so the identity comes with an assignment.

9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
