What Psalm 91:1-2 means
The secret place is close quarters — you can't dwell there and keep your distance at the same time. Watch the order: the one who dwells is the one who abides under the shadow. And the second verse is the psalmist saying it out loud, which is a different thing from only believing it.

3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
